About Grange Lady Forge
PROPRIETOR - MICHAEL JOHNSON
Since early teenage years Mike had an interest in working with metal and transforming it in to items that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. He was originally inspired on a family holiday to Dartmouth in Devon where he watched horses being shod at Middleton’s forge. Middleton’s forge also undertook artistic decorative ironwork of the highest quality and Mike soon decided he would like to be involved in this line of work himself.
On leaving school Mike secured a post as apprentice at this forge and Mr Middleton Senior was greatly impressed with Mike’s enthusiasm and potential (see letter in Testimonials section).
Eventually Mike moved back up North and worked with a number of Agricultural Engineers and Fabricators. However, this type of work did not satisfy Mike’s creative ambitions and so around twenty five years ago he decided to take the plunge and became self employed.
Initially Mike was based at premises in the Sandiway /Cuddington area but then a further opportunity arose - to purchase a derelict building tucked away in the heart of the mid Cheshire countryside, away from distractions and surrounded by nature. Over a period of six months Mike completely restored the building single - handed to create “ Grange Lady Forge” - a working environment that was fit for purpose.
This location has inspired Mike to create some beautiful items of ironwork (see Gallery). Commissions have been sent as far afield as Australia, South Africa, United States and various locations within the United Kingdom.
Mike prides himself in working to traditional methods - all items are completely hand forged (no pre-fabricated parts used!) from start to finish ensuring each item created is completely individual.
Mike is happy to follow designs requested by clients but is equally happy to share ideas regarding the design of commissions.
Quality and individuality are assured for all items crafted by Grange Lady Forge.
